The rank of Ensign First Class (EF) signifies an individual who, while junior in position, has excelled at his role in the squadron, over a period of time. Consistant activity, contact and more can be expected from those holding this rank.

In much the same way as it recognizes capable junior pilots, the rank of Ensign First Class is also used to recognize capable junior staff on a bridge crew.

While the rank is technically higher than that of an Ensign, the rank is more of a service promotion and does not confer any special authority (unlike that to a promotion to Sub-Lieutenant).
