The rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (LJ) is afforded to Sub-Lieutenants who have distinguished themselves significantly. It recognizes their service and contributions to the Empire. This rank is also commonly given to the executive officer (second in command) of a squadron.

In the same way as it rewards excellent flight leaders, this rank is also conferred upon Bridge Crew Adjutants who have proven themselves competent and capable.
