And the said thing is, people have been paid outrageous amounts of money for something as stupid as a blank canvas.

Bane: I am sure you guys have the same proverb in english that we have in German: "Art lies in the eye of the watcher". To me throwing paint at a canvas is not art. It expresses nothing, it shows nothing (only that some people have too much time and others too much money) and is dumb.

My mother agrees with you on this one, Vort - She says that the Mona Lisa is great art. She would gladly take that. But random paint everywhere is... what kids do, not the work of great artists.

That is a 5 minute Photoshop job, if that. My vote is "no".

why end the story..enjoy the humor that he reminds me of a certain ex-member in the way he so believes in something that isnt there so obviously it isnt a one time instance of the behaviour
Vort: Rembrandt is the man. Surrealism and modern art bores the hell out of me.
You know, I saw a very intresting book a few months ago espousing the argument that modern art is not art because it does not strive to be aesthetically pleasing. I was going to read it, but, you know, it kinds belonged to another library and they get a little pissy when you just take their books.*
*The college library I work in has an inter-library loan system that we use all the time.

I think the difference between art in the days of Rembrandt and Dürer and modern art is, as Kenseu has pointed out, that modern art does not try to produce aesthetically pleasing "eye candy" for people to stare at in awe and go "Ooooh, nice!".
Instead, modern art always tries to create something that has not been there before, as well as stuff that makes you think and go "Eh?".
The problem is, that if today's artists were to create paintings like Da Vinci or sculptures like Michelangelo, it would immediately be considered an uncreative, cheap rip-off of the original.
As such, in order to leave a lasting impression and to be mentioned in future books on the history of art, all today's artists can do is to create something unique. Which gets increasingly difficult the more variants of art pop into existance.
Another aspect is that os technological progress. Back in the days, Dürer's works were especially revolutionary because of his advanced techniques. Today, these have been around for a while, and, more importantly, we now have digital cameras to produce realistic images of the world - there's no real need to paint them anymore.
All in all, seeing how neither showing off your skills of an artist, nor copying the styles of artists past is really anything that will get you a lot of praise (or, on a more personal level, even so much as satisfaction), it's really up to the artists creativity. And the fact that people will always rather look at eye candy than think, well, this is the crux of the matter.

Yes and thanks to Fel and forcing me to do other stuff, there won't be for a while.
Seriously, there MUST be something or somebody out that/who does not want me to finish those missions, because for the fast 4 years whenever I have been starting to working on those, something else came up.
