May I suggest putting out an initial e-mailed report intoducing yourself and reviewing the necessity of reporting to you. As Vort said, this would be a much more efficient way of reaching your subordinates. It wil also save you a lot of time and patience in making yourself known and accessible to your fellow officers.

Quick suggestion:

Be highly specific in your orders section. Simply stating "Be active' gives you subordinates literally nothing to go off of, and as such they'll simply do nothing. State "Fly this mission", or "write this fiction", or whatnot. Be specific in your orders.

Educated vs. Learned

A stranger was seated next to little Tommy on the plane when the stranger turned to the little boy and said "Let's talk. I heard that flights will go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passengers."

Little Tommy, who had just opened his book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger "What would you like to discuss?"

"Oh, I don't know," said the stranger, and then thinking he would have some fun said, "How about nuclear power?"

"OK," said Tommy, "that could be an interesting topic, but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same grass yet the deer excretes little pellets, while the cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?"

"Jeez," said the stranger. "I have no idea."

"Well then," said little Tommy, "How is it that you feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know shit?"

Random Thing for the Week

A man was walking in the street when he heard a voice: "Stop! Stand still! If you take one more step, a brick will fall down on your head and kill you." The man stopped and a big brick fell right in front of him. The man was astonished.

He went on, and after awhile he was going to cross the road. Once again the voice shouted: "Stop! Stand still! If you take one more step a car will run over you and you will die." The man did as he was instructed, just as a car came careening around the corner, barely missing him.

"Where are you?" the man asked. "Who are you?"

"I am your guardian angel," the voice answered.

"Oh yeah?" the man asked... "And where were you when I got married?"

A French teacher was explaining to her class that in French, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

"House" is feminine - "la maison."

"Pencil" is masculine - "le crayon."

A student asked, "What gender is a 'computer'?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups - male and female - and asked them to decide for themselves whether "computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for their recommendation.

The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computer"), because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is
incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for possible later review;
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending
half your salary on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine
("le computer") because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they
ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a
little longer, you could have gotten a better model.
