GTA: Vice City

Post by LC Eddard Stark »

Ok computer gurus I have a little problem. I've been playing this game for about a week now and I love it! Thats not really the problem though, well unless you've been talking to my girlfriend...

Anyway, after playing for about 30-45 minutes it starts to slow down and get laggy. I can't figure out what the problem is since I'm using a P4 1.5 Ghz, 512 MB of RAM so on and so forth and only a P3 800 Mhz, with 128 Mb of RAM is required. I surpass all of the recommended hardware requirements so I really don't understand what the problem is.

Also, I've already shut all the other programs off while I'm playing so I know its not that either.

What kind of video card do you have and how much memory does it have?

You may be able to turn down the graphics.

I attempted to turn down the graphics but there's actually no controls to do that.

I'm running a 128 MB ATI Radeon 9200se.

I would think that would be fine to run a game... 128 isn't the highest out there these days, but it's also not horrible, either.

I suppose it's possible that it has a memory leak somewhere, and as it consumes more and more memory, it slows your system down. Have you got all the patches etc.?

Also, I assume it's Windows, so have you rebooted lately? I remember back in the days of Win98 I had this game that ran slowly for no real reason, and it was just poor memory management by the OS, so a reboot helped a lot.

Also: This is the perfect sort of question for the TechHelp board over at www.imperialsquadrons.net/phpbb/

I had the same problem with GTA: III back when it first came out. I was running a PIII 700 back then with a 32 Mb nVidia GeForce 2. I had more than required for system requirements, but I have to set the draw distances to it's lowest setting just to get smooth gameplay. And even then the game would occasionally slow down and lag after a while. I never did find a way to solve it. Perhaps it's something common to Rockstar products.

Ya Halo will do that to me to... but it usually just gives me an "exception error" and I have to reboot to fix it

A question about your operating system is in order. Other than that - got a heat problem in your case, maybe?
