I generally fly (if I have no beam assigned) lasers 75%, shields maintenance. In moments when I don't need the speed, I whack the lasers to full. Shields I normally only charge through dumping cannon energy as it just takes too long otherwise. If I'm given a beam, I normally shunt all it's energy to engines and keep lasers at max.

Incidentally, in TIE, you can use the tractor beam to make up for cr*ppy mission design where the author has assigned starfighter commands to a capital ship (it jumps around a lot and tends to want to fly into you). If you find a "blind spot" where it can't shoot you (or create one! :D ) then you can use the beam to stop the cap ship from manoevering just as if it were an X-W or R-41. I never really use tractor beams other than this, they're for wimps who can't fly fast enough. 8)

Commander: did I hear you say that the ISDs will be human-piloted? I wasn't aware this was possible.

Yeah, all you need to so it edit shiplist.txt, and change "Nonflyable" to "Flyable", and you can fly it :P Only thing about ISDs (and most caps), is all the turbolasers are turrets, and must be fired as such (meaning defensive fire and all target). With skill, a human-controlled ISD can be deadly.

The only time I touch the shield recharge, is after the mission is done, and I'm hull-bashing (or I'm stuck in a period of waiting :? )

That is not correct. You can fire your weapons in two modes:

1) auto-fire -> all weapons will concentrate fire on your locked target

2) "superweapon" -> you fire a single, highly intense beam wich is only found when flying most of the non-flyable ships. This beam is of an immense firepower and can destroy a ISD within 1-2 mins.

Note, it is possible to jam the enemy gun emplacements if one maneouvers a capital ship (with hangar bay facilities) wisely.

And yes, gunboats are a wonderful heavy fighter wich is totally underated by most players.

I'm not too underrated to fly it, but it's depressing when your starting speed is 90 MGLT. :P

I like the Guns because you can switch to ion when your lasers run out. Then you can blast the pitiful rebel scum, and leave them wondering what their fate will out in the middle of space! :twisted:

Dalon, that was in XvT :p
In XWA your combat interface is capable of synchronising both so that you can fire the Laser and Ion cannon simultaneously.

The Gunboat is the fastest heavy fighter in the game. It easilly catches the BWing and lets the YWing eat stardust. Fighters however, have a higher maneouverabilty than the Gunboat.

So far for the numbers, reality shows us that a well flown Gunboat can outmaneouver a XWing *if* well flown and in the hands of a experienced pilot. Most TIE F/I and even Advanced pilots are, unfortunately, also not ready to face a well flown Gunboat. I have seen people having to use teamwork *G* to knock a single Gunboat (and I didn´t count how many times they died until knocking him)

Note: I also fly TIE the most.
But yes, I just flew a EH mission in a GUN, and I think it was 12 X-wings, and who knows how many A-wings. So it can be usefull, it's just a personal preference. :P

I personally like the Gunboat. It's heavy enough to take a beating, it can carry a versatile payload, and it has decent (though not great) speed, etc.
