Possible LOA?

Just a quick report here. School's just started here in South Florida (it's crazy!!!), so I haven't been quite as active lately. Also, my home county is projected to receive one hell of a beating from Hurricane Charlie (possibly a Category 3 storm). I live fifteen miles inland, so the risk of death and destruction is not particularly high for me. However, a risk of sustained loss of power is feasible enough for me to mention that I may not be around for a few days, though I will not have to evacuate unless I am ordered to by Governor Bush, in which case I will definitely be on LOA.

Keep the West Coast of Florida in your thoughts (and prayers, if you bend that way like I do). We're getting slammed with two big storms this weekend; we need all the support we can get...

I will be joining MSG Mitchell on this note, although I am hoping for the best when that hurricane comes by.

Same here, Russ, and I'm sure when you live in the boonies like I do, there really isn't a whole lot to worry about. But it's worth letting my superiors in on my whereabouts here.

You guys are in South Florida? So am I (as of a month ago). I relocated from New England and this will be my first hurricane down here (NE got hit by Bob in '92 and Gloria in '86 but no where near as bad as the south).

Yes, I'm from South Florida, in the "exciting" place of Sarasota County. Lived here my whole life, although the last time a hurricane came even remotely close to this area it was still only a stage one. This one may prove to be a tad bit different though, even though I really am hoping for the best.

Trying to remember where Lee County is in relation to Sarasota (coincidentally, I live there, too!). It's north, south, east, or west of me, but nothing's certain these days...

You guys in florida are lucky. Over here in Southern Calfornia, it's hot as hell! at least you guys get rain (and I do love rain).

Fort Meyers isn't that far away at all from where I'm located, or at least comparatively speaking.

As for California, well I've been to both places, and although my stay there was fairly brief, I did come to notice that it is rather hot there, and maybe even at times worse than Florida in that respect. The rain, however, is something that I do enjoy quite a bit, and at times it actually brightens up my day (or at least changes the course of it in some matter). Today, however, that may just be a little different.

My dad's worked the keys for many a year, though not The Village of Longboat Key itself (that's its official name; thanks to Home Rule laws in Florida, with enough signatures and the blessing of the state legislature, you can start your own city. I think its police chief's name in Clancy Wiggum...). What makes you mention it, by the way? Are you a UF Gator Fan?

Incidentally, concerning temperatures here, the actual temps in Sarasota top out around 92 or 93 Fahrenheit. Not too bad, compared to my aunt's wedding in Omaha, Nebraska, where it was 105 degrees without the heat index (just my luck, being a groomsman, I had to join the bridal party for pictures in the prayer garden in my tux....ohhh.....). The size of the peninsula, along with the ridiculously low elevation, allows air to circulate very well throughout Floirda. The trouble is, Florida is also painfully humid, which can make a 90 degree day feel like 100 degrees, especially on a six-mile run (I love the almost sexual high you get when you run long distances and go into hydration and oxygen debt, to go along with the endorphin rush...sweet...). At least the church in Omaha was air-conditioned, or all my great-aunts would be in a wet-wedding-dress contest....

Little update: Sarasota County was saved by the grim and cold calculus of weather. Hurricane Charley strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane and drilled Charlotte Harbor, in the county immediately to our south. There is believed to be "significant loss of life" in Charlotte and Punta Gorda, Florida, with damage running up into the $10 billion+ range (Hurricane Andrew caused $30 billion in damage and took around 25 lives).

Luckily for me, all I got at my place was a lot of rain and about 35-40 mph winds. We didn't even lose power, thank goodness. How did you do, Dan?
