Taking things old school

Post by Calder »

I thought some of you guys might like this if you didn't already know:

http://www.navalaction.com/#ageofsail

Naval Action is kinda MMOish, but set in the golden age of sail around the year 1800. Players start as captain of a small cutter and can work their way up via battle, trade, shipbuilding, etc to have much larger ships and fleets. There is both PvP and PvE with matchmaking battles and whatnout outside the open world, which is based around the Caribbean.

Still in early access, but VERY fun so far. If any of you give it a go let me know.

Steel has been playing it for ages, Laith owns it. I own it, but just started playing it today, simply because when I had the time it was never available for sale... :p

I'll ignore the easy comeback since we Americans are not boring....

But I'm on PvP2 - US, where the American fleet is very active and large, so that could explain why things are quieter elsewhere.

It seems that the Brits are the largest, followed by the Pirates.

Please. The American "navy" of 1700-1800 was the most boring thing ever. You didn't even have ships of the line until about around what? 1815? Oh, wait, no, forgot the USS America. Which rotted away and had to be scrapped after a whole four or five years. Good job! :p

The only cool thing I could think of are the Original Six frigates, but nailing a navy down to that, reminds me of people saying the German Kriegsmarine was "unboring", because we had the Bismarck. :p

Come now, Vort, you know history.

The US Navy of the post revolutionary time period was small, that is true. But starting around 1800 it was nonetheless made of extremely talented officers and the handful of ships were of exceptional high quality.

Granted, during the time the US Navy could not have gone toe to toe with any significant European Navy, but it didn't have to. But, in ship to ship actions it almost always came out the victor. The original six frigates were probably the best ships of their type ever built.

Bear in mind that by the end of the War or 1812, it was impossible to get insurance on a British Merchant ship - American privateers had made it too dangerous to travel the Atlantic.
