What about the First Strike mod for BF2142? I saw Antilles mention it on IRC and took a look at the website. Could be promising. See this screenshot:

All nice and dandy, however BF2142 is a *first person shooter*. Not a simulator. I am sure there will be some sort of space combat, but for THAT kind of implementation, I am also sure that Battlefront 2, with it's space fights, would be equally good. :P

Vort: I'm aware of that. However, there does seem to be a significant space combat element. I understand what you're saying, trust me, and I'm going to test it out later this week (tonight perhaps), but I still think it's worth looking into. If there's enough of a piloting aspect such that it could be a useful platform for the Navy, wouldn't it be worth using for the Navy? We need to investigate that unless there really is a good reason to think there won't be.

On that note, there's also this for Jedi Academy which looks like it's got a space combat element. I will see if i've got time to download and try it but it might be worth a look at.

Meh. It really does figure that the only two decent mods we could find are either A) not finished or B) not working. The gaming gods hate the Navy, apparently. :P Oh well, keep us in the loop if you get it going, Colonel.

Anyone else have any other ideas, thoughts, opinions, or the like?

I'd dare to say the big companies worked on what was easier for them; eyecandy is easier to do than hitting the jackpot of both a good engine and a good story. We need to consider that for a good sim you need additional software , namely joystick, wheel, etc aaand people doesnt want to waste the extra money for it.

Last but not least, it is easier to insert a game cartigade or a cd or whatever into a console rather than dealing with an install process. It is better to just enjoy the game instead of suffering lag or low performance if your OS is overloaded with extra software or anything. Possible two reasons as to why now people prefers consoles over PC.

Personally I enjoy having my laptop, did whatever I could (more RAM and HD) to make it a somehow decent gaming laptop. I'm pretty happy with what I have, I wouldn't want a wii or a x box 360 if it wasnt because everybody else on my neighborhood just does those consoles...you know, after all, we all want to play with other humans at some point.
