Firstly, you don't have to be an SL to take the Squadron Leader exam, nor do you have to be in a squadron. Anyone - Navy or Army, Ensign or Admiral - can take the exam.

If the mIRC course materials don't answer your questions, you can always look for more information online. If you post your specific questions here, other GE members will no doubt be happy to help you, as well.

Re Orbital Mechanics, I'm afraid I can't help there. CL La Forge designed the course, so try asking him for help.

Everything you need for the mIRC exams is in the notes. Don't expect to find it as "the answer is here", I made sure it involves thinking and understanding.
