In my quest to see if SFO actually meant something else, which could be the key to what it actually was, I found out the following possibilities:

Serious Fraud Office - getting there , sounds like good ol' Geordie La Forge
Special Forces Officer - although this seems the most likely, LaForge isn't really your commando type.

I was once asked, via the ever popular "Dear Senior Fleet Officer" advice column (this was actually the spin-off "Dear Retired SFO") what exactly it was that the Senior Fleet Officer did.

Here is an excerpt:

"...Secondly - What the hell does a Senior Fleet Officer actually do? - I was hoping you could give us an honest answer since you don't have to worry about being fired unlike La Forge.

The response:

“Dear Lieutenant:
...Your second question: well, to put it briefly, what doesn’t a Senior Fleet Officer do? La Forge and I vary a little bit. For example, he is Fel’s code slave for the website. I never did that crap; I had more important things to worry about than being Fel’s pet monkey. Hell, I made Fel do tricks for me, not the other way around! Fel knew his place when *I* was SFO. He also plays a lot in the sandbox, which is something I never did. I also have more panache than La Forge, but that’s hardly his fault. I’m a tough act to follow. Well, I guess the "Dear Leader" would be the other Fel, or maybe Jansen. Or maybe Pol was the "Great Leader" and Fel is the "Dear Leader". Or perhaps Daemon was the "Great Leader", Pol the "Dear Leader", and Fel would be some other variant, perhaps "Canadian Leader" or "Friendly Leader" or "Pretty Good Leader".

I'm open to suggestions.
