Interest in 1O spots seems to ebb and flow. I remember *waaaaay* back when people would fight over them tooth and nail...

Then, I also remember that when I became First Officer of the Chimaera, there were only two people who had applied (myself and Fleet Admiral Fel). And I believe (correct me if I'm wrong Fel) that he was the only one who applied for the Nemesis spot when it opened up shortly after.

Now, it seems there is genuine competition again, which is a good thing. Healthy competition and good natured rivalry is what pushes people to excel. Never shy away from a challenge because you think you'll lose. At the very least, you'll succeed in trying, and people tend to remember that.

Calder: Nope, not quite. It was actually a test of endurance to get the Nemesis First Officer spot. At the time there were (within a short period of time) three openings: Chimaera, Striker, and Nemesis. In that order.

You got the Chimaera. I applied for the Striker 1O job. Tirion won. No surprise there.

I also applied to the Nemesis 1O position, then reviewed by Captain Paul. I can't recall too well who else applied (other than Steel!) but I do know there was a fair amount of competition for the job. Paul sent out lots of questions, actually, to help him differentiate between candidates, so I think we passed e-mails back and forth four or five times before he finally came to a decision.

In both the Chimaera and Striker cases I knew there were people "ahead of me in line", so to speak, and they got it, but just because there's competition doesn't mean you should not apply and get your name out there. You never know when positions will open...

I know it! Half the time when the faction leader dies they auto-assign it to some 50 year old half-wit....

Of course, one of Rome's better emperors was considered nothing more than a 50 year old half-wit - and Claudius turned out to be anything but.
