EAW and GB

Post by Davin Felth »

This is something I've been wanting to rant/say ever since my cousin baught EAW. He said it's supposed to be in relations with the GB games, but the whole game is just based on combat. No "tedious" resource collecting, or anything of that sort but that's what I liked about the GB games. EAW shouldn't have been based on just combat and strategy, leave that to games like BF, etc. Anyone agree?

I haven't seen anything out of LucasArts that said EaW was supposed to be a sequel or anything to SWGB. Two very different games. At most(and I paraphase) it's "The first Star Wars RTS game since Galactic Battlegrounds."

And as for it being based completely on combat and strategy, that's untrue. You will note that there's only one resource - credits - which are used both in SP/MP, land/space/campaign maps. Sure, it may be simple, but it's still resource management.

Interesting. Ahh I should have known, my cousin's always wrong

It may suck for some, but for people like me (or I could be the only one), resource collecting MAKES the game!

I must admit I prefer games with more resource management, I feel it gives some extra depth to a game, however that said, I actually suck more at games with more resource management :P

Exactly! More depth! There should be more things than JUST combat.

I suck at games with resources too. That's why in GB I play Deathmatches..I like starting with over 4000 of everything so I don't have to collect it! 8)

4k of each isn't enough. That's why I spend it all on setting up a resource infastructure. :P

Very true. I don't buy recources from Spaceports too often; I mainly invade my enemy's rescource mine, wall-and-gate it and ship security troops over there, that is, if I run low on supplies.

I also prefer games with more complex forms of resource management, mostly because I'm good at it. Many a foe can be vaquished merely with the power of your unstopable economy. Because if you've got the credits, you can buy the ships. :P

Lately I've been playing good ol' Rebellion on hard, but I have to give the enemy AI a handicap. Basically I play as the Empire (Of course), lock down about four sectors (Usually Swesswenna, Corellia and on the Rim), maximize resource output and build a nice fleet for each sector, and then I just let the other guy try to come at me. So far results are mixed. the AI likes to stick it's head in the sand alot. But it does make for some large battles when the AI decides to come and play.

That's how I got the highscore on the GB mission for the Band of Brothers(March Edition). Wiped out the enemy, built up defenses around the remants of the traitor base and ran hovercrafts from my spaceport to the (defeated) main pirates' spaceport. Left the game running for a few hours. Big number nobody's going to beat. And if they do, I have the scenario saved right before I ended it, so I can just keep going for a higher HS. :P

As Admiral Fel will attest, I have a very good record with RTS games, and part of what I attribute my success to is always having a very good economy. Out-producing your opponent is the easist way to win. I think I talked about economics in one of my strategy essays that (I think) are still in the archives.

The key is to have as many resources for yourself, while also depriving the enemy. Simply sitting back and amassing isn't enough: you have to actively harass the opponent's supply infrastructure. In GB, I found (even playing with the Empire and it's relatively weak air force) you only needed a handful of fighters to swoop in, kill a bunch of workers, and get out. Killing farmers seemed to work the best, because they tended to be relatively stationary while being grouped very close together.

Do it when you have a bunch of nova on hand, and since the Bothan spynet price was dependent on how many enemy workers are out there, you hinder the enemy's supply efforts while getting yourself a discount on a very useful technology.

Yeah, using the Fighters v Workers technique is something I regularly employ, although sometimes it's just to distract the military forces to ease the approach of an assault group.
