X-Wing Alliance Works with WINE!

Post by MCHuskie »

As of the 20th January release, it's now possible to play XWA on Linux through WINE.

I haven't had time to fully test yet but, although the cutscenes are still jerky, the flight looks smooth (albeit at the minimum detail level). Chances are Cedega will have even better support.

Cool. But remember to make a multiplayer test as well ;p

Initial Test Results:

Flew Zeta Squadron's assignment this week (ERS146) using 800x600 resolution and moderate graphics settings. The only real problem was with the sound; it seemed to lag a little behind the rest of the game at times, and once or twice became "stuck" - I suspect this was when other applications were trying to access the sound system, as they did when Ensign Jast signed on to AIM...

However, the game remains perfectly playable, as proven by my pilot file submitted to Captain La Forge a few minutes ago.

As for multiplayer... I never got that under Windoze, due to a rather overzealous firewall somewhere on the college network. I may have a way around, though (I should probably try it through Windows first though).

It's entirely possible that it leaves the system in a state that is, to use a quote, "not entirely stable".

"not entirely stable" is a condition wich will make any windows user feel like being home :p

So in a certain way, Wine does emulate win outstandingly well :p

Besides, leaving something like AIM up will give XWA some quirks in Windows too :P

What sound system are you using? ALSA?

Not if you set away and check 'Disable pop-up notifications while I'm away'. Hiding the windows are probably a good idea too. And the sounds...

Just check everything! :P

I suspect so, because if he was using "Open Source Sound" like Skype does, all other sound would get shut out by this program and it would whine about no sound card if something else was going on.

There was a neat article about how to make ALSA emulate OSS so you can actually have >1 sound at a time, but you'll have to google.

I know, but if I'm doing something quick like testing a mission parameter during building or just popping in to crank out a .plt, I may not bother.

I have them checked by default. If I'm away, I don't need AIM popups filling my screen for me to look at when I come back...

Yes, ALSA. And it seems to be set up to allow more than one sound at a time (I get Gaim noises while listening to music, for example).

Sithspawn! Latest release of WINE doesn't work with XWA. Many curses.
