Chapter 13: The Rescue

Nothing could erase the name "Kardock" from Fel's mind, short of Imperial Intelligence's techniques that were not generally publicized. Fel was not sure exactly who he was, but all he knew is that this name was whispered in the shadows, and mentioned as an example in some official documents, but to his knowledge, no such officer existed.

Was it a code name? An officer's name? Who was he? Or she? Fel knew that he was about to find out, and he wasn't sure he was comfortable with this... Would II have to kill him? Erase his memory?

The Force experiment had not worked out in the slightest for the Rebellion, and they now suspected the source has been misleading tnem, intentionally. Fel supposed that this meant that Kardock had been passing them bogus information under interrogation. The current plan was to go straight to the source, and get information out of him - before New Republic central command finds out of the Pike's failure.

Fel knew that if Kardock did not provide the answers they wanted, he was likely to be executed or transferred to a dark facility somewhere just to the galactic east of nowhere... This meant that their window of opportunity to execute a rescue of him would be very, very short. He had discussed the plans with Renzen earlier.

Renzen had leaked the location of the facility to the Empire, hoping that they would mount a ground assault. By accounts, the location just looked (on the outside) like a standard settlement, so they might not be suspicious that it had been leaked, but there were no guarantees.

Nonetheless, it didn't matter what the Rebels thought - the troops that the Empire snuck in were going to steal the shuttle out from under the eyes of the Rebellion, and then Obsidian squadron would have to protect the shuttle and get away. The game would be pretty well instantly up - there could be no coming back.

They would have to blind jump through to the Empire's territory, and hope that the welcoming committee they had hoped for would be there. No doubt the Rebels would be very, very eager to take revenge on Obsidian and take back Kardock...

The return to the Empire was just around the corner, but it was going to be a wild, wild ride... And he hoped he would survive it.
