1. Extract the contents of the archive into a new directory (i.e.
C:\TFW)

2. Start tfr.exe using the Start Menu/Run or by creating
a shortcut to it in the start menu or on the desktop.

3. When running a new or updated version of the program for the first
time, the preferences dialog will appear. You can access this dialog
later by going to the Preferences option in the File menu.

NOTE: ALWAYS BACK UP ANY TIE FIGHTER FILES BEFORE EDITING THEM!

UNINSTALLATION
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

1. From the File | Preferences dialog, choose "delete preferences
from registry"

2. Exit the program, and delete all files in the program's directory.

YET MORE DOCUMENTATION FOR 2.0b4
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The best improvement (in my opinion) for this version is the inclusion
of an amazing amount of information about each order and how the
flight group will behave if given that order. To access this
information, click the Help menu and click Contents, then open the
Flight Group Editing category and open the Order Descriptions
topic. Also...

I've beefed up the help file considerably, so hopefully, more things
will be answered there. I am working on step-by-step procedures
for creating missions and battles for those that are wondering. The
cut/copy/paste functions actually work now. You can cut/copy/paste
flight groups and messages between missions and in the same mission.
You can also select multiple flight groups and messages at a time, but
only for the cut/copy/paste functions, not for editing them. You
cannot cut/copy/paste any briefing data so far. Does anyone want to
do this? Let me know... I've added support for planets and asteroids
as well. When you select a planet or asteroid as the ship type, the
"status" list box will change to display the planet type or asteroid
size instead. I've also added the TFCD "asteroid base" type ship
types to the program, but since I don't have TFCD, I can't test
these. Tell me if they don't work right... The "..." button next
to the order selector brings up a dialog with the most common orders
arranged more intuitively. Also, clicking the button in the dialog
box brings up a list of all the orders and detailed descriptions.

NEW DOCUMENTATION FOR 2.0b3
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The pilot editor is totally new, but thankfully :), requires little
explanation. However... Each pilot contains two sets of data, one
for the backup pilot, and one for the regular pilot. You can select "Switch
regular and backup data" from the Pilot Menu, and this will swap these
two sets of data. When a pilot is first loaded, the normal pilot is
displayed in the window, and the backup pilot loaded in memory. When you
select "switch," the pilots are actually swapped. This means that what
was the regular pilot becomes the backup pilot and the backup pilot becomes
the regular pilot, allowing you to edit it. I hope somebody can understand
this :) Also, the "calculate score" and "calculate kills" buttons calculate
the total score and total ship kills. For total score, the program adds all
scores from training, combat chamber, and battles. For kills, the number
of kills for each ship type is added together.

NEW DOCUMENTATION FOR 2.0b2
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The new relative dot sizing feature is far more accurate than the old one,
and now, flight groups point toward their first waypoint as in TIE Fighter.
If the relative dot sizes check box in not available, you are not running
Windows 95 in a graphics mode with enough colors. You must use a mode with
more than 256 colors or more than 8 bits per pixel for the new relative dot
sizing function to work.

The "..." button next to the ship type selector in the flight group editor
dialog box brings up a dialog which makes it MUCH easier to choose a ship
type. Ship types are organized by categories. The "..." button next to
the formation selector in the flight group editor brings up a dialog which
displays graphical versions of each formation. The numbers next to each
ship in the graphic represent which ships in the flight group would be in
that position. Under the navigation tab in the flight group editor dialog
box, clicking the "Clear All" button will uncheck all the check boxes and
set all values to 0.00.

The "Flight Groups in Briefing" button allows you to select which flight
groups will appear on the briefing map. Select a flight group if you want
it to appear and deselect it if you don't.

When editing the briefing, if you are in a frame that has a "clear all fg
tags from this point on" event or a "clear all text tags" event in it,
click on the clear all fg/text tags button to delete the event. Click on
the trash can icon to delete all events in the briefing and start over.
Also, the Briefing | Event Editor dialog box allows you to manually
edit/add/delete events. The numbers in this box are NOT converted into
TIE Fighter kliks, they are the actually numbers in the .TIE file. Beware! :)

Also in the briefing editor, you can double click on flight group tags to
edit/delete them, and the same goes for text tags. You can also drag
text tags around to move them.

Again, if you have any questions, just email me.

NEW DOCUMENTATION FOR 2.0b1
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The are several entirely new components to the program, none of which
have any online help just yet. To edit a battle, load the .LFD
containing the battle. Do not try to open .LFD files that do not
contain battles, as this will not work, and the program may crash. When
creating a new battle, just about everything is self explanatory except
for the "Battle Bitmap." The best way to have a good battle bitmap in
new battles is for you to load an original TIE Fighter battle
(i.e. "battle1.lfd") and save the battle bitmap as "battle1.bmp" or some
such file, then load the bitmap into the new battle. You could create your
own bitmaps, but they must use a specific palette, and the import/export
methods are not yet perfected (i.e. it will probably not work :) ). I am
not currently to concerned about this (the bitmaps) but if someone out
there has this as a serious priority of theirs, email me and I'll attempt to
fix it. When creating missions for a new battle, put the .TIE mission
files in the same directory as the new .LFD (battle) file (and NOT any of
the TIE Fighter directories).

THE BATTLE MANAGER DIALOG
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The battle manager dialog allows you to manage the battles which are
installed in the actual TIE Fighter game. Any changes you make here will
affect the copy of TIE Fighter specified in the TIE/Resources/Mission
directory in the prefs dialog. This means that if you delete a battle
in the battle manager dialog, IT WILL BE GONE. Use the battle manager with
care, and always back up TIE Fighter FIRST! The list box on the left of
the dialog represents a list of battles currently installed in TIE Fighter.
You can install a maximum of 20 battles (TIE Fighter's maximum, not mine).
To install a new battle (one you have created), click on an empty slot or
a slot you want to replace, and then click "Import Battle" and select the
new battle's LFD file. The .TIE file's for the battle must be in the same
directory as the .LFD file. Clicking the "Export Battle" button allows
you to select the name of the LFD file to export the battle to. All of
the battle's missions will be placed in the same directory as the LFD file.
Clicking "delete battle" deletes all LFD and TIE files related to the battle. As before, BE CAREFUL!

GENERAL INFO
=-=-=-=-=-=-

There is a somewhat limited help file included. The best
way to learn the program is to load one of the original TIE missions.
These are in the C:\TIE\MISSION directory, assuming you installed
TIE Fighter in C:\TIE. Looking at the way things are done in the
original missions and how all the parameters are set will give you
a good idea as to how to create your own missions.

KNOWN PROBLEMS
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

 - The "Unknown" tab sheet in the flight group editor dialog box does
not have to be edited for missions to work. I do not now what any
of these parameters do, and you can edit them if you like, but I
would recommend against it, as your missions might not run.

 - The "Battle Bitmap" in the battle editing window does not display
properly in 256 color mode. Currently, the only way to resolve
the problem is to switch to a higher color mode and restart the program.

 - Many more, I'm sure.

REQUIREMENTS
=-=-=-=-=-=-

Requires Windows 95, will not run on 3.x.
Looks best with a hi-color or better display, not required.
For the new "relative dot sizes" function to work, a display with more than
256 colors is required.
