I was awarded the Kalidor Crescent by flying a mission of the Outer Sector campaign. Does that mean anything or it's just an error?

Well you can't really do a system like that, because the game awards medals based on the player's score/kills compared to the total amount of possible points/kills in the mission (I think). That's why it's fairly easy to get it in some missions, and near impossible in others.

In all seriousness, nah, Jagged is right: It's just a reflection of your awesome piloting skills.

However, this did give the idea of "OuterSectors Vetern Award" for all those who participate... awarded at the end of course.
(Will be a commendation btw, rather than a medal)

I won't get much commendations if nobody want's to process my files and give me the points I deserve with all I've done so far.

There will be high score medals as well, however, and awards to recognize those who did distinguished service to the Empire during the campaign.

First of all getting a medal isn't that hard. At least I think I remember getting a Kalidor Crescent every time I flew an XWA OS mission.
And I can only suggest getting the Imperial Concourse replacement for XWA, which will replace the medals.
