Exactly. I suppose I tend to draw the east-west line in Europe right around the French-German border. Perhaps that's inaccurate, but I'm sure it's close enough.

I was always under the impression that the East-West line was at Germany and Austria on the west, and points east from there (including Czech Republic and Slovakia and so on as east). The distinction, I think comes from the descent of the people: The Easterners are all Slavs (like your beloved Vice Admiral Fel).

Yeah, it used to be between the two Germanies (ger-many-s! Get it?! :P) and now I think we use the Oder/Donau line at Germany/Austria to border of them easterners! :P

I suppose my thinking comes from the western front in WWI, where of course France was an Ally and Germany an Central Power. But that's just speculation.

It was the Western Front because the Eastern Front was against Russia. So "Western" was a relative term.

Seems I've started getting banners in Czech.

I can sort of read them, but it makes for some interesting stuff.

I understand why I get the ones in French, at least.

I am not sure if it depends where you are.
It *might* go by IP to determine where you are from and then send you specific languages aimed at you (and you better duck when a .357 Polish page comes at you! :P), but if you get pages in Czech, I think it still goes by "clicks" to send out banners, regardless of language/ip/whatever.

How hard would it to code such a "you have this IP, so you are from this country & speak this language - here's your page in your native language" thing, anyways?

Well, you see IPs on IRC that end with certain country codes (.uk for the UK, for instance), so all it would take is a bit of code to recongize them, and then go from there.

Do you enter "this ip range = this and that country"?

It'd probably be in a database table somewhere, yes. I suppose it *might* be possible for PHP to internally recongize the country/region, but I doubt that comes standard in the core package.

Can't you do a reverse lookup? You know how you get IPs by DNS lookup, right? (This works in IRC with the /DNS command

). There's a reverse DNS lookup somewhere where you can enter an IP and sometimes it gives you the XYZ.whatever.de (for example), and you can parse the .de and give the targetted banners

Right after you send me the TC pages for upload.

And I'll check PHP.net, but I know you can get the current user's IP, so Fel's method would probably work.

EDIT: Yep. gethostbyaddr() would be the function. Then all you would need to do is parse the string (with explode(), perhaps) and ID the country code.
