Update on Wargame Sponsored by CL Calder

Post by Calder »

Gentlemen:

I'm waiting to hear back from Rebel Squadrons, but here is our tentative order of battle:

1st Imperial Strike Force
Line Captain P.D. Calder, Commanding

ISD Chimaera - Line Captain Calder, Commander La Forge
Alpha Squadron (T/I)
Beta Squadron (T/A)
Gamma Squadron (T/I)
Delta Squadron (T/A)
Iota Squadron (T/I)
Omega Squadron T/I

ISD Nemesis - Line Captain Wedge
Epsilon Squadron(T/I)
Eta Squadron(T/B)
Gimel Squadron(T/I)
Psi Squadron(T/A)
Kappa Squadron(T/I)
Omicron Squadron(T/A)

You will notice that this Order of Battle differs slightly from our current rosters. This is necessary for our purposes in the wargame; they do not reflect a sanctioned change in the structure of the GE.

Tentatively, we will be opposing a force of two Mon Cal cruisers with three squadrons apiece. Thus, we will not be using the post-Endor patch in XWA. We will have more fighters but their fighters will have shields.

Those who I know for certain can fly are as follows:
Myself
Captain Wedge
Commander La Forge
2LT Mar
SL Russell
EF Stark

If you are interested and I have overlooked you, let me know. I'll issue more updates as I have them.

I was having connection problems today, but it turns out to be due to an overzealous firewall that continued to run in the backgound after I shut it off. Seems to be working now, in fact La Forge and I tried a little Multiplayer and it worked fine.

Um, I signed up too. I was planning on buying XwA if that's the problem.

Since it will be based on X-Wing Alliance, yes, it would be wise to get the game. :P

Captain: The only thing I can see that needs to be changed on the OoB is the inclusion of a T/B squadron. I believe we agreed on the details of it (name) yesterday.

Also, a note on MP with XWA: before this thing kicks off, everyone should make sure they can connect with at least one other person, if not everyone that will be participating. You don't even need to load up XWA to test this - MS-DOS's "ping" program seems to be rather reliable in determining connect-ability, and it very easy to use.

Lastly, Wedge and I put in a few hours yesterday working on a patch to get turrets for capital ships. We've made some progress, and the outlook is relatively good. I'm sure we'll let everyone know when we have more info.

I asked that question at an earlier date and the answer is no, there will be no Legion participation at this stage. Maybe in the future when we are more familiar with the idea, but not right now.

How do you use DOS's "ping"?

To use DOS's ping program:

* Open a DOS prompt
* Type "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx", where the xs are the values for the IP address you want to ping
* Push enter

If you get data back, you should be able to connect. If you don't get anything, you may have problems.

La Forge: Thanks for pointing that oversight out. I corrected it so the OoB correctly reflects the T/B squadron that will be on the Chimaera.

I was having problems with XvT connecting to Wedge but I am able to connect to others in XWA. And hopefully now that he's fixed his "overzealous" firewall I expect we should be able to connect easily now in XWA and XvT (I hope!)

I've adjusted the Order of Battle slightly, so you might want to take a list at the original post again. After practicing several times against a rebel force of two Mon Calamari cruisers with two squadrons of A-Wings (on Ace level), a squadron of B-Wings and three squadrons of X-Wings (with myself piloting the Chimaera) I found that our bombers were next to useless since the Chimaera and the Nemesis did an admirable job on scratching the enemy cruisers. However, I also found that the enemy B-Wings, which I equipped with heavy rockets (likewise with the bombers) did plenty of damage to the two star destroyers. Thus, we will get rid of two T/B squadrons (one on each star destroyer) and replace them with T/I squadrons to assist in covering the capital ships.

No doubt in the actual battle things would play out differently because their fighters would also put more effort into protecting their own ships. But, provided we are covered by our fighters, I am certain Wedge and I can make short work of enemy capital ships.

Also, per his own suggestion so that the stupid rebels don't get confused, Wedge's rank will be standard "captain" in dealing with the wargame without the "line" variant.

A couple of things to point out. First of all, a T/B squadron set to 12 waves of 1 with a human pilot is actually quite useful, in that the pilot will have full and complete control over every torp that is fired from that unit. This means that you can fire them "blind" (without homing), and the Mon Cals won't fire back at them. After you fire your missiles, simply strafe the Cruiser until you die, then rinse and repeat.

Secondly, this can not be stressed enough. We need at least two units of fighters defending our Star Destroyers, and they have to make sure that they actually defend them. Capital ships, no matter who is piloting, will be easily destroyed by bombers such as B-Wings unless sufficent fighter support is close by. This, of course, can be adjusted in game, as we'll be using TeamSpeak (right?) to issue orders and whatnot.

And Wedge: You really think the Rebs are that stupid? :P

UPDATE:

I've heard from the Rebel Squadrons Fleet Chief of Staff, a lieutenant general, and he has authorized our wargame!

Now, I am waiting to hear back from their XWA commanders (two brigadier generals and a colonel) to work out the details.

More updates as I get them!
