Lt. Colonel Burton's Guide on How to Apply for a Command

Post by Munro Burton »

First, state what you are applying for, just to prove you at least have that little bit of sense.

Second, explain how you qualify for the minimum requirements and any of the desirables. List any other relevant skills.

Third, explain why you would be the best choice for that position and describe what you plan to do if you are appointed to the position.

The fourth thing is important. Remember your ID line! You won't be suitable as a CO or XO if you never include your ID line to the end of emails. Nobody will know exactly who you are and that's not a good thing.

Finally, a great optional would be to attach reports you have written for previous units or list references, even from other online clubs.

An example is as such:
I wish to apply for the position of Viper Company Commanding Officer.

I believe I qualify for the position as I have the following certifications and skills.
  • BF BCC & ACC
  • Army Officers Exam
  • Company Leadership Exam
If I recieved the position, I would encourage more activity by:
  • Starting unit competitions such as 'New Motto,' 'New banner,' etc.
  • Joining the Battlefront Combat Ladder and encouraging Company Members to do the same.
  • Any other plans you can think up - the more, the better!
Thank you for considering this application, sirs.

Generally, you should prove yourself as active before applying for a command-level position. In the Army, you would ideally be a Corporal before you applied for XO or CO, with a few medals under your belt(or on your chest).

And thus ends Lieutenant Colonel Burton's Guide on How to Apply for an Army Command!

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you use my Guide and are rejected. Not at all.

Once, long ago, we had a "GE Electronic Position Application" Program which asked you a lot of these questions and you filled in the blanks and it generated HTML output for you to turn in.

Perhaps one of these would be good again?

That Electronic Position Application program still exists - http://empirereborn.net/files/cifd/GE-EPA.zip

It's configured for the old GE, where there was just the Navy, though. Might need some reworking. I seem to be fresh out of programming skills, unfortunately, or I'd do it myself. :P

I suggest we keep to "Old fashion" way. (and by old I don't mean the Old electronic form :p )

I personnaly prefer to receive "hand made" applications because I find them more interesting to read.

And there you go, kids! That's how you get a job. By being interesting to your COs. :P

Personally, I don't like something that says "Can I have XO/CO/MAA/CoA/SC?"

That's just poor to do. :P

I agree, being interesting (in a good way!) is the best method for getting a promo, hands down. If we're interested in your work, then odds are we'll give you the position so we can see how you expand it. :)

The legacy continues!

This was written a long time ago when people all used the same format. It was good for that, but was generally only used for low level applications. Higher levels meant better hand written ones.
I am sorry but I no longer have the Delphi source code, but it could be coded in about an hour now :P
